The Embroidered Patch Border, is there just one kind?

Here at Patches On Caps there are three main parts in the creation of a patch. First we have the emblem itself and we have given you extra insight into the types of patches we create. Secondly, we have the patch backing to affix the patch to our desired target, including iron on, sticker, and Velcro. Finally we have the embroidered border and this completes the patch.

We have two style of embroidered borders as both complement the patch in different ways depending on the look you are going for, complexity of the design, and size of the design.

Embroidered Patch Borders:

Merrow Border:

This is the traditional embroidered border for a patch of any kind and probably what you have seen the most of in the market place of patches. The Merrow border or Overlock sewing is the process of wrapping thread around the edge of the patch. The patch has already been cut for the merrow border to be applied. It is best used on larger patches with simple shapes.

When using the Merrow border with a non traditional patch technique such as woven or sublimation, you get a real embroidered patch look and feel as the Merrow border is embroidery thread and allows the merrow border to be able to lend itself for both a clean finished look and, or, a old school vintage look to any of our patch techniques to complete your patch perfectly.

Pros:

  • Traditional patch border.
  • Thicker Border adds weight to the patch material.
  • Provides clean and or vintage look.

Cons:

  • Must be used with larger simple shapes.

Satin Border:

The Satin border is the embroidered border stitch that is more common with machine embroidery and direct embroidered garments. The Satin border is very flexible, precise, and can be as thin as 1 mm, while providing a clean border with a true finished embroidery look.

The high speed embroidery machine applies the Satin border to the patch material, we then precisely cut the patch away with the Satin border sewn and in tact with either a laser or hot knife to ensure precision to the millimeter and a quality finished Satin border.

Once heat pressed to a garment it gives the appearance of direct embroidery and when coupled with a woven patch the challenges of small lettering and details are gone, and any logo can now have a embroidered solution.

Pros:

  • Easily applied to complex and small shapes.
  • Gives a direct embroidery appearance.
  • Organic or polyester thread may be used.

Cons:

  • Cannot be wider than 3.5 mm wide

Let our experienced team of designers and applicators hep you decide the best patch border for your intended purposes, when planning your next creative project.
